Report Recommends Less Dependence On Coal-Generated Electricity

KENTUCKY...
A new report says economic opportunities and job growth would be created if Kentucky could move away from an overwhelming dependence on coal-generated electricity.

The report, called Building Clean Energy Careers in Kentucky, comes from the Berea-based Mountain Association for Community Economic Development.

It says the state can create jobs in fields such as making homes and factories more energy-efficient, manufacturing components for energy-efficiency systems and creating renewable energy.

The report also says adding diversity to the state's energy sources would help offset expected increases in costs associated with mining and burning coal.

The report says the average price of that electricity is up 43 percent in Kentucky in just the last five years.
