With spring arriving, there are plenty of adventure tourism events being planned across Kentucky. “Spring is a wonderful time for Kentuckians and visitors alike to get outside and enjoy our beautiful scenery,” First Lady Jane Beshear said. “There’s an adventure near every home and I encourage all Kentuckians to get out and enjoy the outdoors this season.”  The Office of Adventure Tourism in the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet compiles special adventure tourism events from around the state throughout the year. Shooting Events & Instructional Classes, March 19; April 8-10

Fishing In Neighborhoods with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources
Details: The Fishing In Neighborhoods (FINs) Program was started by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources to make fishing opportunities more accessible to everyone in the Commonwealth.  As the weather warms and the days get longer, this program brings good fishing closer to home.  More than 20 counties now have FINs lakes in them.  The lakes are stocked year round with trout and catfish, and can be managed for bass and bluegill as necessary.  All of the fish stocked are keeper size too!  For a listing of FINs lakes, stocking schedules, or to find more information visit www.fw.ky.gov/urbanfishing.asp or call 1-800-858-1549.

Adventure Events at Bernheim Arboretum & Research Forest

Details: Bernheim Arboretum & Research Forest continues to provide excellent programs and events for the community.  Regularly scheduled programs continue through March and April including the OWLS (Older, wiser and livelier seniors) and the ECO Kids (Every Child Outside).  There will also be special events such as the “Adopt A Tree Day” in honor of Arbor Day. Big South Fork Rafting Season with Sheltowee Trace Outfitters, March 19-20

Details: The third weekend in March marks the opening of the Big South Fork rafting season with Sheltowee Trace Outfitters.  Sheltowee Trace has been providing outdoor adventure in Kentucky for more than 25 years.  This rafting season runs through May 13, 2011.  These trips usually book quickly.  Contact Sheltowee Trace at 800-541-RAFT (7238) or fun@ky-rafting.com.

2011 Lexington-Big Sandy Proposed Rail Trail Ride, March 19

Details: This seventh annual ride will cover a lot of ground from Lexington to Ashland.  The ride will travel the proposed route for the Lexington-Big Sandy Rail Trail.  This includes passing through Winchester, Mt. Sterling, Morehead, Olive Hill and ending in Ashland.  The ride will begin at 7 a.m. at Pleasant Ridge Park. Riders who want to complete the whole route should plan on arriving in Ashland around 8 p.m. that evening.  Riders not wanting to travel the entire route may join where it is convenient for them and ride as long as they like.  The intent is to follow an average speed of 11 mph, and as always riders should stay visible and be self-supporting.  Check out the following links for more info on the proposed rail trail itself and the cue sheet for this ride.  Lexington-Big Sandy Rail Trail: http://www.kyrailtrail.org/projects/big-sandy.php

Details: The Kentucky Trail Riders Association (KTRA) hosts rides throughout the year in Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, Ohio and Missouri.  Some are day rides and others are overnight rides.  These rides help bring about a fellowship among trail riders as they enjoy scenic trails and time spent with their equine partners.  Here are the dates for rides coming in April 2011. Details: The Knott County ATV and Motorcycle Rider Training Center is one of only five training centers in the United States.  It provides training for riders of all skill levels and has access to hundreds of miles of trails.  This spring the training center will feature classes for beginner and experienced riders.  The Basic Rider Course will be held the weekend of April 8-10. On Saturday, April 9, there will be an Experienced Riders Course as well.  Popular ATV/UTV manufacturers such as Polaris, Yamaha, Can-Am and Kawasaki are looking to return to the ATV Center in 2011 to provide demo rides for new products.  To register, learn more about the classes or the training center in general, contact Tim Cody at kcrtc@live.com.

Details: April 2, 2011 is the Civil War Trust Park Day at Fort Duffield.  Volunteers are needed to help cleanup the park and historic site.  Volunteers will receive lunch, a T-shirt or a patch, as well as a history lesson.  On April 16 the park will host its Annual Wildflower Walk.  Enjoy one of the park’s most popular trails and learn about the many wildflowers that are abundant in the park.  For more info call 502-922-4574 or email FortDuffield@insightbb.com.
