Lexington Man Gets Stiff Sentence

KENTUCKY...
A Fayette County jury has rejected a murder charge against a man accused of killing his girlfriend, but convicted him of a lesser crime.

Jurors recommended a 50-year prison term for Edward Stokely on Wednesday after finding him guilty of first-degree manslaughter in the shooting death of Lavena Gibson in April 2009.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports jurors also convicted the 35-year-old Stokely of being a persistent felony offender, but acquitted him of three counts of wanton endangerment.

Defense lawyer Tom Griffiths says his client will appeal the manslaughter conviction.

Stokely's sentencing was set for Jan. 7.
