Kentucky Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul has added a press secretary to his campaign.

The campaign says Gary Howard has been hired as go-between for the media and Paul, a tea party favorite. A campaign statement says Howard previously worked as a staffer in the U.S. Senate and as a political communications professional.

Paul campaign manager Jesse Benton says Howard will be a "great addition" to the campaign team. Benton has doubled as a spokesman for Paul, who caused an uproar in the spring by expressing misgivings about applying part of the Civil Rights Act to private businesses and for calling criticism of BP "un-American" in the aftermath of the Gulf oil spill.

Paul's opponent, Democrat Jack Conway, hired John Collins as his communications director last month.
