Fleeing Man Drowns

A police chase turned deadly Friday afternoon when 37 year old Walter C. Holbrooks jumped into the Russell Fork of the Big Sandy River and drowned. Kentucky State Police received a call regarding a burglary in Elkhorn City. A KVE Officer was dispatched to the scene. While en route, the officer spotted a white van matching the description of the getaway vehicle in the area of Yellow Hill. When the vehicle was stopped, Holbrooks exited it, running on foot, and jumped into the river, dropped below the surface of the water and failed to resurface.
