EPA Cracks Down On Mountaintop Mining
The federal Environmental Protection Agency indicated Tuesday (today) that it is cracking down on mountaintop removal coal mining. EPA says it has considerable concern regarding the environmental impact mountaintop mining has on habitats and streams. The agency has sent letters to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that challenged permits requested by the mines. EPA says it will review mining permits using the best science and following the letter of the law. The action leaves permit requests in limbo.
