Severe Damage And Major Power Outages From Storm
125,000 customers in both Kentucky and West Virginia were reported without power early this morning due to last night’s heavy rains that brought gusty winds averaging between 60 mph to 71mph through the coalfields of eastern Kentucky and southern West Virginia. Every county in our listening area reported the same thing, downed trees, power lines that fell across roadways and houses. According to AEP’s website 14,000 customers are without power in Pike County including 9,700 in Pikeville. Johnson County last reported 3,900 hundred without power, over 5,000 in Martin and Floyd counties. In West Virginia one death was reported in McDowell County when a roof of a gymnasium collapsed due to the weather, one person was also injured. Last report Mingo County had 3300 customers without power, Logan 5500 and Wayne 7500. A spokesperson for AEP told us that it could be midnight Sunday before all customers have the juice.
