Governor Steve Beshear has proclaimed May 4-10 Drinking Water Week in Kentucky. “Drinking Water Week provides an opportunity for all of us to consider the immense value of a safe, reliable water supply in our lives and in our communities,” said Governor Beshear. “It creates jobs, attracts industry and investment and provides for the health and welfare of citizens in ways ranging from disease prevention to fire suppression. My administration is working diligently to keep our water safe for consumption and to extend the availability of clean water to all our citizens.” The Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet, which oversees public water suppliers, expressed its appreciation for the men and women who work to provide safe drinking water to residents and visitors in Kentucky. “In Kentucky we have some of the highest quality water in the world and much of the credit goes to the local water treatment plants for their outstanding compliance records,” said Donna Marlin, manager of the Division of Water Drinking Water Branch. “We often take water supply for granted until it is threatened, either by drought, water main breaks or some other event. Public water systems in Kentucky face increasingly complex challenges, yet, overall, they have an extraordinary compliance record.” Water systems in Kentucky are required to regularly sample water for many different contaminants following federal and state limits.
