First Bill Lands On Kentucky Governor's Desk

A bill dealing with driver's licenses for active-duty military service members will be the first to reach Gov. Steve Beshear's desk.

House Bill 168, sponsored by Rep. Tommy Thompson, D-Owensboro, was approved unanimously by the Senate this afternoon. The bill would allow those serving outside the state up to 90 days to renew their driver's licenses after returning to Kentucky. They could not be cited for driving without a license during that period.

The Senate also approved a bill aimed at saving the state money on purchasing contracts. Under Senate Bill 100, sponsored by Sen. Gary Tapp, R-Shelbyville, contracts that call for particular items could substitute equivalents if they provide a better value. The bill, Tapp said, is directed at "sole source" contracts, where a particular item is described in the contract, allowing the price of that specified object to be driven up and costing taxpayers more money.
