Nation's First Mining Death Of 2008

The first 2008 mining death in the nation occured Monday night in Letcher County. Officials say it happened at the Blue Ridge Surface Mine, which is operated by Cumberland River Coal Company...owned by Arch Coal.

Roy D. Sturgill, age 29, of Isom backed back too far while attempting to unload his truck. He backed over a cliff and it is believed he was thrown from the truck during the fall.

Officials say the mine will remained closed during an investigation. Sturgill was employed by Bates Contracting of Whitesburg.
