Update on Explosion at Phelps High School.
Trooper Scott Hopkins of the Kentucky State Police Post 9 in Pikeville informed us that a bomb squad cleared Phelps High School this evening after a firecracker ignited in a female student’s pants pocket while she was in a classroom.
Hopkins told us that the 16 year-old sophomore was transported to Pikeville Medical Center with minor burns, she was treated and released. Five other students were complaining of possible hearing injuries.
The incident occurred Wednesday morning at around 10:00am. Students were evacuated and then sent home.
The Kentucky State Police is still investigating the incident
