Mine Reclamation Funds Released
The federal government has released 274-million dollars to clean up abandoned coal mine sites in the U. S. Thanks to a 2006 federal amendment, it is twice the amount available in the previous fiscal year.
Kentucky, which ranks third in coal production, is getting 31-milion dollars. Last year 22 fatalities at abandoned mine sites were reported nationwide. The Mine Safety and Health Administration says the vast majority of those deaths was from drownings.
