Johnson County Judge Executive Upset Over Possible Expansion of Jail.

The Johnson County Fiscal Court is considering legal action to stop an expansion project at the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center. Judge – Executive Tucker Daniel suggested filing a declaration of rights petition against the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, stating that he didn’t feel the board had power, without county approval, to expand its building to house state prisoners.

The facility serves Johnson, Magoffin, Martin and Lawrence Counties. Tucker says that the four fiscal courts need to be involved in the decision making whether to expand or not. Tucker says that currently reserve funds are being used to cover the $168,000 deficit that the facility has tallied. Tucker added that there is no guarantee that the state would send prisoners if the jail did expand.
