Eastern Kentucky and Southern West Virginia Experiencing Severe Drought.
Temperatures have soared into triple digits for the second consecutive day across the coalfields of eastern Kentucky and southern West Virginia.
The National Weather service has now upgraded our drought conditions from moderate to severe.
The NWS told us that our region has a rainfall deficit of between 12 to 15 inches and that Pike, Mingo and surrounding counties would have to average four inches of rainfall for the next four months to end the drought.
A low pressure system is expected to move across the area for the weekend. Temperatures are expected to range from the upper 80’s to low 90’s. The forecasters say that there is a slight chance of rain during the time period. However prolonged precipitation is not expected until next week.
